An Afternoon in the Park: Songs and Stories of Resistance: Paradise Street Community Park, Brisbane April 9th, 2023

Paradise Street Community Park are pleased to invite you to an oral history and music event in their beautiful, butterfly-attracting garden.

The great Scottish-Australian songwriter Alistair Hulett once remarked, "Folk music is really the oral history of the working-class." Join us in Paradise Street Community Park as we explore this concept with an afternoon of resistance stories and songs.

Participant Stories of the Woomera Detention Centre Refugee Breakout, 2002

At 2pm we will be relating and discussing the experiences of participants in the protests at Woomera Detention Centre in the early 2000s, with a particular focus on 2002, when activists aided the escape of a number of detainees. This is the "oral history" bit, and discussion moderator Paula de Angelis, itinerant historian, would love to hear from anyone who participated in any of these protests. Contact Paula at paula@onehandclapping.com.au or via fb.

Songs of local and global resistance with David Rovics, Steve Towson, and Paddy & Kimbo.

At 4pm we take full advantage of the natural amphitheatre to bring you local and global songs of resistance and social history. Some of Toowoomba's finest are trekking down the mountain to regale you with Aussie music old and new. Globe trotting troubadour and expert topical songwriter David Rovics will then sing some of the many stories of resistance he has rendered into song from here and around the world.

If you are in or around Brisbane, join us on Sunday 9th of April for a community event to sustain your spirit, and be sure to bring your own story-telling hat!
